Humans Of UWCM – Mahiro

January 13, 2025

Inspired by the Humans of New York series, this English project gave our Year 12 students a chance to share their personal journeys through a short essay. Mahiro, a student reflected on how she learned to embrace support from others, highlighting the power of community and kindness.

Until I attended high school, I aimed to be a perfect person. I was bad at relying on others or asking for help because I thought I had to handle everything by myself. However, when I went to a Japanese high school, I realized that this mindset made things more difficult. So, I gave up on it. Since then, life has become much easier.

I am currently attending UWC Maastricht. Here, I face a lot of difficulties. It’s not just me — everyone struggles with something. We can’t survive without helping each other. I am supported by many people, and I’ve realized that relying on someone means discovering their kindness. So, this is how I feel now: we don’t have to be shy about relying on others. Instead, we should help each other, and this makes the world more beautiful.
