UWCM’s response to press coverage

February 12, 2025

Recently, UWC Maastricht has been portrayed in some media outlets as a place where antisemitism is tolerated. At our school, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Behavior such as antisemitism, racism and any other form of discrimination contradicts our core values and has no place in our community.

Unfortunately, some incidents took place at our school that have unfolded differently. We take every report of hate-based behavior very seriously. Each case is thoroughly investigated in line with our safeguarding policies and appropriate actions are taken, such as informing our internal community, restorative conversations and suspensions.

While we have protocols in place, we recognize that some members of our community feel our response has not been sufficient. We are actively engaging with them to better understand their experiences and concerns. The input of our community is essential in strengthening our approach to ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment.

With over 900 students from more than 100 national identities, UWC Maastricht represents the diversity of the world. We acknowledge that differences in background, history and perspectives can sometimes lead to complex conversations. That is why we continue to invest in structured dialogue, for example through guest speakers, facilitated debates and forums, ensuring that conversations remain open, respectful and constructive.

We call on our entire school community, students, staff, families, alumni and beyond, to uphold the values that define UWC Maastricht: diversity, respect and peace. Together, we must ensure that our school remains a place where education serves as a force for peace and a sustainable future.
