Caretaker Mac has begun his retirement!
November 8, 2021
October 22, 2021 was Mac’s, Hermon Mc last day as a caretaker at UWC Maastricht. We managed to catch him for a quick interview while he was handing out candy to all the students…how typical!
Hello Mac, today is your last day at UWCm Maastricht before your retirement. How do you feel right now?
Well, I have mixed feelings. I came to the school in 2002 and I met a lot of students, saw many graduations. You have to have some kind of emotional attachment if you work here for such a long period of time. And don’t forget the teacher, the staff, they brought a lot of joy and all together with the students that is the reason why I get up in the morning to come to work. But now I decided that I need to take a break now.
What will you do during this break?
I first need to settle in and get used to the fact that I do not need to go to work. And after that I will see. But I did promise them [UWCM] that if they need something I will gladly come to help. So I will still be around every now and then.
Is there any special message that you would like to share with the UWCM alumni community?
If you are ever in a situation when you disagree with your teacher, just remember that your teacher is there to guide you and if you do not agree with his/her lesson or opinion, then you have to change it when you get older, yourself. Just take in the lesson and change it later when you grow older.
What is one particular thing that comes to your mind when you think of UWCM?
The smile! I have many memories from UWC but the smile that I receive when I come to the school or when I have done something for the students or staff. That was enough payment!
Thank you, Mac! We know that it was your smile and your kind words that brightened up so many of our days!
If you would like to send a message to Mac to thank him or to share a memory, feel free to email it to alumni@uwcmaastricht.nl and we will make sure that it will find its way to Mac!
