Learning Support Specialist

Full-time position starting January 1st, 2025.

UWC Maastricht is seeking a qualified and experienced Learning Support Specialist to join the diverse and dynamic academic team in our Secondary School. The successful candidate will work within the Special Educational Needs (SEN) team, under the guidance of the learning support coordinator and supervision from the Deputy Director of Academics, to support students with identified learning needs and ensure they can access the curriculum. This role demands strong communication skills, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset, as you will work closely with colleagues across the school, including the ELL (English Language Learning) team and Counselling teams when needed, to deliver high-quality support.

Key Responsibilities :

Student Engagement and Support: You will assist students with their learning processes, ensuring they can fully engage with the curriculum, setting high expectations that inspire and motivate them to achieve ambitious progress. The role involves identifying and fostering each student’s strengths, enabling them to succeed despite learning challenges.

Collaboration: Secondary School teaching staff, you will contribute to the development and implementation of best-practice learning support, including the identification, application, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions for students with special educational needs.

Inclusive Practices: You will play a key role in maintaining an inclusive environment, ensuring students with specific learning needs receive the necessary support. This includes assisting with developing executive functioning skills and working with students with IEPs (Individualised Education Plans) and other accommodations.

Professional Development and Training: You will stay informed about the latest research and developments in the field of SEN and learning support. This includes participating in ongoing professional development and sharing best practices with colleagues. Additionally, you will provide training or guidance to teaching staff to enhance their understanding of how to support students with special educational needs in their classrooms effectively.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in special educational needs (or related field).
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in SEN or learning support, preferably in an international school.
  • Experience working with students with learning differences, including IEPs and accommodations.
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting students with executive functioning skills and specific learning needs (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia).
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse community.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to handle multiple tasks flexibly and efficiently.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Fluency in English.

Terms of Employment / Remuneration

  • You will get a temporary contract of employment under Dutch law: the initial contract is until January 1, 2026 and can be renewed after that.
  • According to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Secondary Education (‘CAO VO’), the package will be commensurate with the position’s responsibilities. The salary in pay scale 10 lies between € 3301,- and € 5030,- for a full time position, based on relevant experience.
  • Participation in the school’s pension plan via the ABP Retirement/Pension Fund.
  • Support in the application for the ‘30% Facility for Incoming Employees’ with the Dutch Tax Authorities (if relevant).
  • Location: UWC Maastricht, the Netherlands.

 

To be able to work in the Netherlands, a (foreign) staff member must be able to successfully apply for:

✔ Residence and work permits for the Netherlands.

✔ A Dutch VOG (certificate of good conduct).
